“You're being naïve.” “You don't understand how the world really works.” “Come down to earth.” As we grow and learn we've all heard these and similar offerings, and, like songs from our past, we now hear different meanings within them we didn't pick up on just a few years ago, these tidbits, that are supposed to contribute to our coming of age process, take on new meaning as we grow and learn. Later on, we often hear them spoken to someone else, and may perchance discover new doors to our understanding of the intent behind such seemingly harmless phrases and how they can be twisted and perverted to take on new meanings.
Later on in life they are typically followed up on with additional smatterings of phony wisdom such as, “sometimes you have to do bad, to do good,” for example. That's the kind of false logic that's been used to justify numerous crimes against humanity throughout history like the persecution of Christians by the Romans, the barbaric practice of torturing and executing people accused of witchcraft in Europe and the US or the lynching of blacks in the South prior to and even after the Civil Rights Movement. It's the kind of thing a Nazi officer might have uttered to a young subordinate or even their own child when asked why Jews were being experimented on, gassed, shot, starved to death and more in Nazi Germany.
Another saying that is also often twisted and perverted is, “to the victors go the spoils.” It's the kind of thing child molesters say to each other to justify or assuage their own feelings of guilt when they travel to lesser developed nations to pay pimps so they can steal the innocence of children sans legal repercussions. Sure, the relatively wealthy trust fund baby, assistant football coach or even the gregarious local weatherman come from places in the world that may be doing relatively better than lesser developed nations, but rape is rape and molestation is molestation no where it occurs.
But how many of us don't already feel this? The majority of us just don't have the sexual predilections leading our brains to reference the word “child” when we think of sex. We don't think “intimacy” when we see children. We simply see them for what they are. Unfortunately for society, our culture and the world at large, there are those that do equate them with such things, and their disgusting habits are not relegated to civilian life only, as it turns out.
Over the past decade a series of lesser known journalistic discoveries uncovered a dark and disturbing world and culture tied to our nation's military leading to a call for action against crimes against humanity uncovered within them. One of our nation's leading defense contractors, DynCorp, as it turns out is a breeding ground, cesspool filled with and luring pit for people that associate themselves with and participate in human trafficking. What's worse is that of the four cases uncovered thus far, three involve children.
The first public outing of the culture within DynCorp came in 1999 regarding Bosnia where people employed by the company, contracted by our government and thus receiving US taxpayer dollars for its work, were purchasing with those tax dollars the lives of children as young as twelve years old. The children were forced to live with the purchasers as sex slaves.
No one working for DynCorp seemed to give it a second thought. And as proof, the children were forced to accompany their purchasers to corporate functions in Bosnia as dates. No one from DynCorp's corporate structure uttered a word against it. Finally, after years of these children suffering such humiliating lifestyles, two brave soldiers of conscience came along and blew the whistle. (http://www.salon.com/2002/06/26/bosnia_4/)
The second incident to be brought to light came in 2004, when reports surfaced that employees of DynCorp paid for underage prostitutes while working for the US military in the South American nation of Columbia and even videotaped their rape of a child while there. The video of that rape was circulated on the streets of the Columbian city where it occurred, and the young victim committed suicide as a result. Number three came to light in 2008. On that occasion, “A contractor died when a DynCorp manager used an employee's armored car to transport prostitutes, according to Barry Halley, a Worldwide Network Services employee working under a DynCorp subcontract.
“'DynCorp's site manager was involved in bringing prostitutes into hotels operated by DynCorp. A co-worker unrelated to the ring was killed when he was traveling in an unsecure car and shot performing a high-risk mission. I believe that my co-worker could have survived if he had been riding in an armored car. At the time, the armored car that he would otherwise have been riding in was being used by the contractor's manager to transport prostitutes from Kuwait to Baghdad.'” (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/29/us-military-contractor-us_n_991...)
Finally in 2009 documents surfaced on WikiLeaks stating, in May of 2009 a memo was sent between Afghani officials and the US State Department requesting help in covering up an incident where DynCorp employees hired male sex slaves from Afghani sex slave traders to dress as young females and dance provocatively for the entertainment of the DynCorp employees and Afghani policemen. The DynCorp employees were training the Afghani policemen, and the incident occurred at a party thrown by the DynCorp employees for the policemen that the DynCorp employees also attended. The dancing boys dressing up like girls is an old tradition in the region called Bacha Bazi, that was apparently dying out until somehow it started coming back during the recent war in Afghanistan. (I wonder how?) The “tradition” also involves the male child slaves being bid on, then raped later on in the night. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/26/AR200907...)
DynCorp admitted the incident in Afghanistan occurred, and claim to have taken action against the perpetrators, yet when I emailed the State Department myself asking for comment on the matter, they refused to comment or even acknowledge the incident occurred. (http://www.lawsuitagainstuconn.com/statedepartment.html) I find it puzzling that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would allow this. These are not secret incidents and have happened numerous times. They are so well publicized that President Obama was forced to sign an executive order enacting policy in addition to what already existed regarding sex trafficking and defense contractors. (http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/09/25/fact-sheet-obama-a...)
It is said to be a “zero tolerance” policy. But why did they not just enforce the policies already in existence? What good is additional policy, if there were already laws there that were simply being ignored? Is this yet another empty election year promise from the administration that was supposed to be about “peace, hope and change?”
DynCorp is one of the governments’ three main private defense/ security contractors and gets over 95 percent of its $3 billion plus revenue from taxpayers. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DynCorp) If there is a zero tolerance policy, then surely they no longer are contracted to work for us, right? That's what I wanted to know when I called them the day after the policy was announced. I was told by people at DynCorp's corporate headquarters in Texas, when asked if they still held contracts with the US government, that they did and that their work was exclusively with the US government.
They still receive taxpayer dollars, meaning there was and is no “zero tolerance policy.” It's empty words. This means our government believes raping children is okay when weighed against other things. They believe it is permissible and the media says nothing. If it were bigoted and pointed statements, like a Jewish rapper saying that they changed the spelling of their name to sound Muslim to fool black Muslim rappers as if they were stupid, or conversely if it were pointed jabs at the important Jewish cultural and religious rite of ascension, Bar Mitzvah by a person of the Muslim faith, we would denounce the people making those statements as morally wrong and racist, right?
Yet, our government and media feel it is necessary to hire child molesters and rapists? Really? Aren't there ways to win wars without raping orphans and molesting children? Whatever our faith let us pray for these children and their souls, or take some time to ponder their plight. Thus far, our government has forsaken and pushed their plight aside, as being that of lives not worthy of humane treatment. These things would never be allowed had they occurred on US soil. But, are children worth any less due to cultural differences, differences of nationality, religious differences or color of skin? Our government, and those that sanction this behavior by refusing to stop it, for fear of their political futures, should feel ashamed for allowing children to continue to be treated this way by people given the privilege of being contracted by the US government. We cannot allow this to continue.
